Turning Sustainability into Action With Treevolution 3.0

QIU’s ongoing Treevolution programme marked its third iteration with more than 250 staff and students contributing to the creation of greener and more sustainable surroundings in our hometown of Ipoh.

Organised through the Community Service course under the General Studies Unit, the initiative was conducted in collaboration with the QIU SDG Steering Committee (Education Cluster), Ipoh City Council (MBI) and Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) to enhance a recreational park through hands-on eco-landscaping and community-based activities.

The programme brought together QIU Community Service July 2026 semester students, staff and lecturers to plant hundreds of trees in eight designated areas within the recreational park. Rather than focusing solely on tree planting, the students undertook a range of eco-landscaping and community enhancement activities designed to improve the functionality, appearance and environmental value of the recreational space.

Beyond tree planting, students worked collaboratively to develop several distinctive features across the designated areas, including a Mini Garden, Wishful Tree, Reflexology Steps and Shellac Gazebo.

The Mini Garden introduced a dedicated green space featuring plants and landscaping elements, while the Wishful Tree provided a creative community feature that encouraged visitors to participate and share their hopes and wishes. Students also constructed Reflexology Steps, creating an outdoor feature that can support recreational and wellness activities, while the Shellac Gazebo added both functional and aesthetic value to the park.

The initiative also saw students taking a hands-on approach to environmental responsibility through the construction of two DIY dustbins frames, encouraging proper waste disposal and contributing to cleaner and more sustainable recreational surroundings.

Reaffirming our commitment to experiential learning, community engagement and environmental sustainability, Treevolution 3.0 provided students with an opportunity to translate their learning from the Community Service course into meaningful action.

Working across eight designated areas required students to plan activities, coordinate tasks, manage resources and collaborate effectively to complete their respective projects within the programme period.

The collaboration between QIU, MBI and JPS brought together higher education and local authorities in promoting environmental sustainability, community engagement and improved public spaces. Through Treevolution 3.0, QIU continues to advance experiential learning and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while nurturing socially responsible graduates equipped to contribute positively to their communities and the environment.
