QIU Takes Home 8 Awards at Culinaire Malaysia 2019

QIU’s captivating chefs have given us cause for celebration again!

After winning four awards at the Penang International HalalChef Challenge in March, our Culinary Arts team doubled their awards tally by sweeping eight accolades at the recent Culinaire Malaysia 2019.

The eight awards included one bronze in Class 2 Plate Dishes courtesy of Chef Afif Naim Abd Rani and a Diploma Award in Class 3 Malaysia 5-Course Platter, thanks to Chef Noor Asneeda Ishak.

Six more diploma awards came from our second-year Diploma in Culinary Arts students. Here’s the full list:

  • Anatasha Reshmajit Denis – Class 8 Plated Desserts
  • Marakrishnan Pandian – Class 18 Fish/Seafood Main Course (Western Cuisine)
  • Muhammad Imran Shamshul Baharin – Class 18 Fish/Seafood Main Course (Western Cuisine)
  • Shahida Noor Shah Nazim – Class 19 Meat/Poultry Main Course (Western Cuisine)
  • Rakshay Pillayy Selvakumar – Class 19 Meat/Poultry Main Course (Western Cuisine)
  • Hemathri Shanmugam – Class 20 Apprentice Salmon Main Course (Western Cuisine)

Held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, this year’s edition of the ‘Malaysian Battle of the Chefs’ attracted around 1,500 entries from 1,000 culinary professionals.

Hotels and chef associations from as far as China, Brunei, Indonesia, Taiwan and Korea took part, including the Palace of the Golden Horses, Traders Hotel KL, Renaissance, Grand Hyatt KLCC, Dorsett Subang, Four Seasons, Hilton KL, Park Royal KL, Shangrila, Sheraton, St. Regis KL, Mandarin Oriental and Marriot Hotel Seoul Korea.

Our team also competed against institutions like Kun Shan University Taiwan, Hsing Wu University New Taipei Taiwan, Korea Hotel & Tourism Occupational Training and Jinwen University of Science and Technology Taiwan.

It’s worth pointing out that this was our first time joining the competition, but this didn’t faze our heroes at all.

“The team underwent intensive training for the past two months. It was our first time at Culinaire but the students showed they were able to compete with hoteliers industry players,” said Ms Asma Amirah Ahmad, programme coordinator for the Bachelor Culinary Arts (Hons) and Diploma in Culinary Arts.

“Every single student left with an award, and this shows that our students are on par with the industry demands and requirements.”

Congratulations to our culinary champs – we’re sure more awards are coming!
