School Of Computing Student Shines at Top Engineering and Technology Competition

The Faculty of Computing and Engineering at QIU started 2023 with a bang when Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) student, Chung Yau Kit, won laurels for the university by securing a podium finish at the 2022 edition of the prestigious IEEE Malaysia Section FYP Competition, as per the results announced recently.

Competing in a field of over 300 submissions in 22 tracks from collegiate representatives from across the country – including Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Multimedia University, Monash University Malaysia, Universiti Malaya, etc. – Chung Yau Kit clinched the 2nd Runner-up position in the Track 02: Circuits and Systems category with his submission titled Smart Walking Frame, supervised by Ms Leong Ying Mei, senior lecturer at the QIU School of Computing.

His innovation will help the elderly and those with physical impairments navigate their surroundings without risking injury. The Smart Walking Frame will alert them to obstacles like potholes and pooled water via its onboard vibration system and buzzer. It will also double as a personal safety device since it can alert emergency contacts discreetly through SMS messages if the user faces robbery or theft.

Organised annually since 2012, the IEEE Malaysia Section FYP Competition recognises the academic performances and contributions of deserving students in public and private institutions of higher learning. IEEE – the popular acronym for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers – is the globally trusted source for engineering, computing and technology information.

We at QIU are very proud of Chung Yau Kit and look forward to his future exploits in engineering and technology!
