QIU Mourns the Passing of Cherished Faculty of Medicine Lecturer, Prof. Dr Vijayalakshmi Natesan

QIU is deeply saddened by the passing of Prof. Dr Vijayalakshmi Natesan, a beloved former lecturer of the Faculty of Medicine who served the University with distinction for a decade. She was 71.

Prof. Dr Vijayalakshmi—fondly known to colleagues and students as Prof. Viji—was one of the founding members of QIU’s medical school, playing an instrumental role in shaping the academic foundation upon which the MBBS programme stands today. Her contributions, commitment, and compassion have left an indelible mark on the University community.

As one of the architects of the inaugural medical curriculum, she devoted herself to building a robust and future-ready programme. In her role as the Coordinator for the MBBS Preclinical Phase, she ensured seamless integration of teaching, learning, and assessment components, setting high standards for academic coordination during the medical school’s formative years.

Prof. Viji also served with distinction as the Chairperson of the Curriculum Committee, overseeing the continual evolution of the curriculum while upholding the rigorous educational standards expected of a modern medical programme. Her organisational skills were well known—she had a remarkable ability to streamline complex scheduling and possessed an unparalleled command of the curriculum’s development, changes, and intricacies.

Beyond her administrative and academic excellence, Prof. Viji was a passionate Microbiology educator who brought clinical relevance and real-world insight into every lesson. Yet it was her humanity that left the deepest impact. She was widely regarded as a motherly figure—a patient, caring mentor who guided cohorts of students with warmth, wisdom, and unwavering dedication.

Demonstrating her commitment to student success, she regularly provided one-to-one tuition for students at her own home. Many graduates credit their confidence and progress to her personalised support, kindness, and belief in their potential.

Prof. Dr Vijayalakshmi Natesan’s legacy at QIU is one of leadership, academic excellence, and genuine compassion. She helped build not only a curriculum but a culture—one grounded in integrity, diligence, and care for the next generation of medical professionals,” said Chief Operating Officer Nicholas Goh.

The QIU community extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and former students. Her contributions will forever remain a cherished part of the University’s history, and her memory will continue to inspire all who walk through our halls.

May her soul rest in peace.
