As a proud member of the local community, QIU is always excited to do our part in promoting healthy activities and behaviour in our society.
Last Sunday (Oct 6), the University had the pleasure of hosting a mental health public talk which was organised by local NGO, the Family Wellness Club.
The talk, titled ‘Mental Wellness – Many Roads to the Mountaintop’ was delivered by Harvard-trained public health academic and Integrative Medicine and Wellness expert Professor Gerard Bodeker.
An advisor to the United Nations, Prof Bodeker taught medical sciences at Oxford University for 20 years and is an adjunct professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University.
Drawing on decades of invaluable experience, he delved into evidence-based methods to reduce stress and anxiety, including meditation and the consumption of a nutritious diet.
Prof Bodeker also espoused the power of regular exercise and living a purposeful, sociable life – advice that was roundly supported by the 100-strong crowd who came from local universities, schools, government agencies and associations.
The event was also graced by psychiatry experts like our own Vice-Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Raman Narayanasamy and Tan Sri Dr Mahadevan Mahalingam, who is known as the ‘Father of Modern Psychiatry’ in Malaysia.
In his address, Prof Dato’ Raman Narayanasamy lauded the event’s organisers, underlining the importance of educating the community about mental wellness – especially as it was held during the World Mental Health month of October.
