QIU-Cardzone Bond Strengthened with Face Comparison Tech Tie-Up

The partnership between QIU and one of Malaysia’s top payment solution providers Cardzone Sdn Bhd entered a new phase today, as both parties joined forces on the development of revolutionary Face Comparison technology.

Both partied inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to develop Face Comparison and Document Identification program for “Electronic Know Your Customer” (eKYC) processes.

This fascinating technology uses facial recognition systems to automatically verify the identities of individuals applying for payment cards and electronic payment accounts.

Developed by QIU’s students and lecturers, the project is yet another example of QIU’s hands-on education manifesting in real-world, industry-relevant innovations.

On hand to sign the MoA was QIU Chief Operating Officer (COO) Nicholas Goh and Cardzone Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Danny Lo. The signing was witnessed by QIU Council member Tan Sri Dato Seri Megat Najmuddin Datuk Seri Dr Hj Megat Khas, and Cardzone Executive Chairman Datuk Raymond Yeong.

Also present was QIU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Raman Narayanasamy and QIU Registrar Muhammad MG Omar.

The collaboration will work towards the development of an automatic and secured verification process using a ‘selfie’ video face recognition and document authentication system, applying Computer Vision and Machine Learning Techniques.

At the moment, most local Know Your Customers (KYC) verifications still use the ‘traditional’ method – providing their IC cards to agents or visiting bank branches to verify their identity manually.

The new project will remove a tedious, time-consuming, and error-prone process in applicant identity authentication process. It will significantly increase productivity and efficiency, while also improving the customers’ experience.

QIU and Cardzone began their partnership in Oct 2018 by signing a research contract to discover Data Mining and Machine Learning techniques for fraud detection in credit card transactions. The success of this previous collaboration meant that more tie-ups were only a matter of time.

We were also proud to have our talented students present at the ceremony to showcase some of the University’s cutting-edge IT-related inventions – including the One2Many Speech Translator and the Just-Bread bakery app.

Goh said the technology behind today’s MoA was a prime example of QIU’s hands-on education at work.

“Guided by our experienced academics, our students are already creating cutting-edge technology that redefines new boundaries in their respective fields,” he said.

“Nearly 80 per cent of our lecturers have industry-experience, and their connections provide our students with the knowledge and skills to make an immediate impact in the real world.”

Meanwhile, Lo said the collaboration was a win-win situation for both sides, noting that Cardzone hoped to work with QIU on more projects in the future.

“What they do is not just theoretical or academic. They are using their considerable talent and creativity to solve real-world problems,” he said.

“Most of our Financial Institution customers have embarked on their digital transformation journey with the aim of providing frictionless and excellent digital experience to their end customers. For these financial institutions, our collaboration today addresses these issues head-on.”

Congratulations to everyone involved in making this collaboration a success, especially the Faculty of Science and Technology and the project manager Dr Lee Lam Hong. Keep up the fantastic work!
