QIU Academics Win Best Exhibitor Award for Research Protecting Children from Sexual Harassment

When our academics shine in competition, it underlines the quality of our education and the people who teach our students.

Watching them win ranks among our proudest moments, and once again, we’re thrilled to report that our academics have risen to the top with a remarkably beneficial project.

A cross-faculty team of four academics bagged the champion title for “Best Exhibitor Award” at the Intervarsity Corporate-Academia Symposium (ICAS’24) & Pedagogy Innovators Showcase Competition (PISC), hosted by Sunway University.

The championship team comprised the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tilagavati Subramaniam (team leader), Assoc. Prof. Dr Divya Rose Peter, Dr Ruuhina binti Mohd Sani, and the Faculty of Business and Management’s Ms Anna Arokia Nathen, supported by the Centre of Research and Innovation.

A total of 20 submissions were received from various universities and 12 teams advanced to the final showcase and exhibition session. Participating universities included Sunway University, Sunway College, Sunway Business School, Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU), UPSI, London South Bank University, HELP University, and Hensard University.

The competition encompasses several thematic areas, each underscored by the critical fusion of academic expertise with industry insight. The participants were required to explore and innovate within the theme “Advancements in Teaching Pedagogy with Industry Application and Industry-Oriented Learning Initiatives.”

Our team’s winning presentation showcased a research titled “Augmented Reality: Innovative Protection Against Sexual Harassment for Disabled Children”.

This study aims to demonstrate the implementation of an AR-based educational tool using the MAKAR application to teach disabled children about sexual harassment, empowering them with knowledge and strategies to act, prevent, and protect by reporting such incidents.

AR technology integration in educational practices makes learning more interactive and memorable, increasing the likelihood of knowledge retention and practical application. Ultimately, this innovative solution offers a novel and impactful approach to safeguarding vulnerable children.

Congratulations to the team for a stellar achievement that centres around such an important cause!
