MBBS Sophomore Claims Victory in National Mnemonic Video Challenge

Our medical students have once again proven they rank among the elite of future healthcare professionals. Marria Latif, a bright, resourceful sophomore in our MBBS programme, won fresh accolades for QIU by winning her category in the recently concluded Anatomy Mnemo-Magic Video Challenge 2023.

On her march to victory, Marria swept past rivals from University Malaya, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, International Islamic University Malaysia, and Monash University, among others. The competition, bearing the theme ‘Magically Boost Memory in Anatomy,’ was organised by the Malaysian Anatomical Association (MAA) to commemorate World Anatomy Day this year.

Coached by Associate Prof. Dr Deepa Kandaswamy – Head of Department of Anatomy in the QIU Faculty of Medicine – Marria won first prize in Category C: University Students for her entertaining and insightful submission titled: Arterial Supply of the Human Body. Her classmate, Janet Ann a/p Loudesamy, also showed the depth of talent in our medical school by clinching the consolation prize.

Altogether, QIU was represented by six talented doctors-to-be: Marria, Janet, Rupinder Kaur, Subhashini Sivagobi, Tebhilashini Kanasen and Fathima Sahlah Shahal Mohamed.

The MAA provides a range of platforms for local engagement and global connection. It promotes the exchange of innovative ideas related to anatomy education and anatomical science research.
MAA’s Anatomy Mnemo-Magic Video Challenge 2023 was designed to make the learning of anatomy both accessible and enjoyable. It required participants to submit videos with a maximum duration of one minute using text-based mnemonics, visual mnemonics, or a combination of the two.

World Anatomy Day falls on 15 October each year and honours the work of Andreas Vesalius, a Belgian physician revered as the father of modern anatomy. It celebrates the discipline of anatomy and reminds people around the world of its importance in training health science professionals.

Well done to all our representatives for successfully showcasing your skills on the national stage. You are a source of great pride for the faculty and university, and have shown the world what our students can do!
