Plant tissue culture is an ever-expanding field that has made a tremendous impact in the global agricultural and horticultural scene.
The rapid growth of the large-scale plant tissue culture industry has proven how the science behind the mass propagation of plants via plant cell, tissue, and organ culture has benefitted global food production—as evidenced by businesses generating billions of dollars annually.
What’s certain is this: the plant tissue culture field requires skilled workers in the years to come.
With this in mind, QIU initiated a joint venture with India’s SAGE University Bhopal to organise a plant tissue culture course that aims to equip potential tissue culturists in the art of manipulating plants in vitro.
Participants from 18 countries, ranging from enthusiasts to field experts, registered for the virtual course from November 10 to November 23.
Fourteen plant tissue culture experts affiliated with both QIU and SAGE University Bhopal were invited to speak on topics covering various aspects of home and commercial tissue-cultured plant cultivation.
Divided into three tracks that covered basic, applied and commercial plant tissue culture techniques, the programme provided basic knowledge on plant tissue culture as well as advanced research techniques and skills for commercial purposes.
The domestic consumption of tissue cultured plants or their products has grown hand-in-hand with the awareness of the advantages plant tissue culture confer in terms of plantlet yield and quality.
More such courses will be organised in the future, with a follow-up course scheduled in the first half of 2022.
