QIUP Debate Team muscles their way into semifinal in Debate Tournament

With motions based on the theme of Embracing 21’st Century Challenges, QIUP’s intrepid debate team consisting of Sahibzda Mubashir “Moby” Noor (Bachelor in Mass Communication in Journalism) and Deva Rubiin Denamany (Foundation in Science) with Jinissyha Chandran (Bachelor in Mass Communication in Journalism) as adjudicator/alternate competed their hearts out in the Politeknik Ungku Omar British Parliamentary Debate Tournament.

The duo of Moby and Deva reached the semifinals by competing first in five rounds and then a quarterfinal match. In addition, Moby was recognized as the 6th best speaker of the tournament during the closing ceremony. Overall, QIUP finished 5th out of 55 teams.

“While we have had very good results at public speaking events, this is the best we ever done at a debate event.” states Mr. Raj Dronamraju Senior Lecturer in the Communication Department and Debate Club Adviser “This is primarily due to two factors – Moby and Deva working very well together as a team and the use of forms to document the positions and arguments of each role in a parliamentary debate”.

Now that they have attained new levels of achievement, the QIUP Debate Team looks forward to both practicing with higher seeded teams and competing against them on the debate tournament circuit.
