QIU Triumphs at PSC International Cricket Sixes Tournament

QIU’s tradition of sporting glory continued in style last weekend, as our Cricket Eagles put in a dominant performance to win the Penang Sports Club International Cricket Sixes Tournament trophy.

The Eagles finished head and shoulders above the field in the 20-team tournament, which included cricket clubs from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Australia, India and Pakistan.

We were also the only university team to take part in the prestigious competition, which was held at the Penang Sports Club Field from Sept 6 to Sept 8.

In the group stage, QIU finished second in their five-team group, winning three and losing one.

However, this was enough for them to snag a quarter-final berth against Singapore Cricket Club, who were dispatched in a tight battle which went to super overs.

The momentum kept building for our boys, and we beat MAFCA by 11 runs in the semi-finals.

Under the intense pressure of the final, the Eagles put in their best performance of the tournament, crushing Old Thomians Swimming Club by a dominant five wickets.

“The key to our victory was teamwork, determination and dedication,” said coach and Bachelor of Journalism student Keshminder Singh.

“I’m proud of the boys – they did really well and they deserve the victory. It was a thriller and we’re looking forward to joining again next year. We’re all extremely grateful to our Chief Operating Officer Mr Nicholas and the University for their support and belief.”

This is only the second time that the cricket team has taken part in local tournaments, after reaching the quarter-finals of the Perak International Sixes in 2017.

The Eagles name is gaining quite a foothold in sporting circles. Only last year, the QIU Hockey Eagles stormed to victory in the Perak Hockey League and second place in the Selangor Hockey League.

We’re looking forward to more trophies guys. Keep soaring high, mighty Eagles!
