QIU Medical Students Crowned National Intervarsity Surgical Quiz Champions

At QIU, we pride ourselves on producing students who shine under the highest competitive stakes. And once again, we’re proud to herald another set of student champions who have taken on nationwide challengers and come out on top.

This time, our Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students made us proud, after two of our teams notched up a first-place and semi-final finish at the UniKL Intervarsity Surgical-Based Quiz—held on March 11.

We sent two teams to the event, consisting of six talented young doctors-to-be. The strategy paid off, as QIU’s Team 1 stormed to the top ahead of second-placed Universiti Malaya (UM) and third-placed International Medical University (IMU)!

On their way to the championship, the winners took down challenges from UM, two Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) teams, three IMU teams, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, and Taylor’s University.

The intense competition also included teams from hosts UniKL Royal College of Medicine, Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia and Indonesia’s Muhammadiyah University of Makassar.

QIU’s Team 2 rounded off a fantastic showing by making it to the semi-finals—no easy feat when you consider the strength of a mighty field of competitors from Malaysia and beyond.

We’re sure you want to know the names of the students who put our name in lights. Here they are!

Team 1:

  • Chun Wai Kah
  • Shermaine Yee
  • Tan Qi Ning

Team 2:

  • Heng Iyn Iyn
  • Saaleneerajeshwary a/p Raja Segaran
  • Tan Qi Yu

If some of those names sound familiar, it’s because they’ve already made waves during their time at our Faculty of Medicine.

Shermaine Yee had her medical hypothesis paper on COVID-19 myths indexed by a Tier 1 medical journal and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Meanwhile, Tan Qi Ning and Tan Qi Yu made headlines for their prodigious leap into medical school at the age of 15 and 13 respectively.

This latest win displayed the academic strength of our students and serves as a testimonial to the quality of our medical programme.

The students put on a fantastic show and have made us all proud. Let the celebrations begin!
