Making the Right Food Choices with the Healthy Eating Practices Workshop

They came, they listened to two lectures, and they played a salad-making game. But in the process, they learned information that could add precious years to their lives.

The second edition of QIU’s Healthy Eating Practices Workshop series returned on a beautiful Saturday morning, gathering participants from diverse backgrounds. The free workshop aimed to promote healthier eating habits and inculcate easily applicable steps towards a healthier lifestyle.

The event was organised by QIU’s Community Impact steering committee and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, in collaboration with the Perak state Women’s Development Department (JPW).

To kick things off, QIU academics Dr Nurul Hazliana Harun and Dr Bhupinder Kaur shared valuable insights on the basics of calories and the importance of monitoring ingredients and additives in our food.

They also provided practical tips on how to make healthier food choices when cooking at home or eating out. and demonstrated easy-to-follow recipes for healthy meals.

But as always, it wouldn’t be a QIU event if there wasn’t a hands-on experiential element to the event. This time, the participants were challenged to a salad-making contest, where they had to cook a healthy salad consisting of ingredients that they won in a guessing game.

The unplanned, random list of ingredients added an extra twist to the cooking contest, but our participants made some fantastically tasty salads!

One of the participants, Chew Sam Keong said the event was informative and engaging.

“I was very surprised that there’s so much we can still learn regarding a healthy lifestyle,” he said. “There’s no running away from the fact that food is important, and knowing how to select food with low calories will have a hugely positive impact on our life.”
