QIU Life Sciences Students Shine at UISS 2023

Quest International University’s (QIU) Faculty of Integrated Life Sciences (FILS) is going from strength to strength! No sooner had we celebrated Dr Nik Athirah Yusoff’s recognition as an Environmental Steward at the Young South-East Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) than the faculty’s astute students again proved their mettle in a major competition.

This time, at the UTAR Intervarsity Science Symposium (UISS) 2023, they secured wins and podium finishes in multiple categories, beating out stiff competition from INTI International University, Taylor’s University, and UTAR.

Held virtually on 26 and 27 August, UISS 2023 was organised on the theme “Develop sustainable future and environment with Science and Technology. The symposium brought together an impressive field of undergraduate and postgraduate students from around Malaysia to share their research findings.

Without further ado, here are our winners:

Postgraduate Category

• Best Oral Presentation Award – Lee Rattanak Sambath

• 1st Runner-Up – Shah Kamal Khan

•  2nd Runner-Up – Sarannia Thanganathan

Undergraduate Biological Sciences Category

• 1st Runner-Up – Tham Kah Jun

Undergraduate Agricultural Category

• Best Oral Presentation Award – Liew Xi Nee

• 2nd Runner-Up – Chong Hui Yee

Their success at UISS continues the faculty’s stellar track record of excelling on the national stage and beyond. Just recently, FILS academics and students joined forces across faculties to add thirteen more awards to QIU’s tally at the 2023 edition of the Malaysia Technology Expo, including the coveted gold medal.

Late last year, our intrepid trio of biotechnology students surged past notable public and private universities to finish in first place in the National Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Association’s Agricultural Competition 2022.

UISS 2023 was jointly organised by the Centre for Agriculture and Food Research at UTAR, the Faculty of Integrated Life Sciences at QIU, and the Royal Society of Biology and the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at INTI International University. This platform allows students to exhibit their research, exchange ideas, and share the rapid advances in scientific research globally.

Congratulations to all our winners! Not only are we thrilled by the fruits of your labour and intellect, but we also can’t wait for you to blossom as scientists and make discoveries that influence society and change the world.
