QIU’s unwavering commitment to impactful research projects drives our relentless pursuit of excellence.
We are thrilled to share another significant achievement in the realm of research, as Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences academic Dr. Komala A/P Thirumalai secured a prestigious Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) from the Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).
This grant will support her research project titled “Deciphering in-vivo anti-arthritic potential of Hanguana malayana (Jack) Merr ethanolic extracts.”
Collaborating with fellow lecturers from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Aman Shah bin Abdul Majid, Dr. Nurul Dayana bt Mahazir, as well as Ts. Dr. Suganthi A/P Appalasamy from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan and Prof. Dr. Shaida Fariza Sulaiman from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Dr. Komala’s project addresses rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic autoimmune condition affecting approximately 5 in 1000 Malaysians, as reported by the Arthritis Foundation Malaysia.
The project focuses on exploring the anti-arthritic potential of Hanguana malayana (Jack) Merr, a widely distributed plant in Southeast Asia.
While traditionally used to alleviate bone pain, hemophilic conditions, fungal skin infections, and even malaria, its specific anti-arthritic properties remained under-researched. This research project aligns with our commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and contributing to improved healthcare outcomes for all.
We look forward to seeing the fruits of this promising research project. Congratulations, Dr Komala!
