Guiding the Research Journey: QIU Welcomes Postgraduate Students Through Induction Programme

Postgraduate students at QIU gained valuable insights into the research journey during the university’s Postgraduate Research Induction Programme, which provided practical guidance on academic expectations, research skills, supervision, and assessment.

The session began with an introduction to the Centre for Postgraduate Studies (CPGS), including its roles, key contacts, and student support services. Students were then guided through the research degree journey, covering common concerns, essential research skills, working effectively with supervisors, and strategies for managing progress and overcoming challenges.

The programme also included a session on assessment, academic integrity, and examiner expectations by Prof. Dr. Vijay Kumar, the Dean of CPGS. Students were introduced to the Continuous Assessment Framework (CAF) to help them better understand the assessment requirements throughout their studies.

A highlight of the programme was the panel sharing session featuring Dr Nick Baker from the University of Otago and Dr Farhana Abu Bakar from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Both speakers shared valuable insights, experiences, and practical advice from their respective research journeys.

“The Postgraduate Research Induction was an insightful and engaging experience that broadened my understanding of the research journey. The sharing sessions and guidance provided helped me feel more confident and motivated to contribute actively to my academic work,” said Fiona, who also appreciated the opportunity to learn and connect with others in the programme.

Another participant, Khairulanwar, described the session as an eye-opener regarding the postgraduate journey, adding that having a clearer understanding of the process helped to strengthen motivation and measure progress more effectively.

Overall, the induction programme provided a valuable platform to equip postgraduate students with essential knowledge and a clearer understanding of their research journey ahead.
