How This Student and His Family are Helping 500 People During the MCO

When the Movement Control Order was established, Diploma in Hotel Management student Harwind Nallasamy and his family knew that the underprivileged would be hit the hardest.

They decided to help. And instead of waiting, they sprung into action immediately.

Harwind, 22 and his elder brothers Kaliyappan, 31, and Aroon Varhmah, 30, provide free food daily for over 500 people in Ipoh and its surrounding areas.

Supported by their friends, they go around areas ranging from Bercham, Tasek and Chemor to Simpang Pulai, handing out packets of cooked food and daily essentials to the people who need them the most.

What’s even more impressive is this: they don’t belong to any non-governmental organisation (NGO) or association. Their volunteerism is entirely supported by their family and friends.

“My brothers and their friend Setravelloo Santharan run their own businesses, including two convenience stores,” explained Harwind.

“The goods and food packets are from our own stores and we don’t ask for any donations.”

The food packets are cooked in two places. The first, in Tasek, cooks vegetarian dishes while the second in Bercham is cooked by Harwind’s brother, and includes vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Also, here’s another fun fact: Harwind’s brother Aroon is also a QIU alumni, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.

So why does Harwind do this? For him, it’s all about helping out and making a difference.

“We knew that a lot of families struggle in this situation. That’s how we came up with the idea to help people who are in need.

“What people see you do may not be remembered, what they hear you say may be forgotten, but how they feel your intervention in their time of need will always be remembered,” he said.

As long as they are able to, Harwind and his family will continue to help out the less fortunate around Ipoh. He welcomes any contributors who would like to join in.

“If there is anyone who wants to help out, we are happy for them to do so. We will do as much as we can. God bless all. Stay safe, stay home and stay healthy.”
