German Medical and Pharmacology Expert Joins Accomplished Academic Advisor Line-Up

Noted German physician and pharmacologist Prof. Dr Ulrich Förstermann is the latest big name to join QIU’s impressive list of international industry and academic advisors.

Prof. Förstermann is a professor in the Johannes Gutenberg University’s Department of Pharmacology Previously, from 2009 to 2013, he was the Vice President for Research at the same institution.

Prof. Förstermann has been appointed as Academic Advisor to the Faculty of Medicine (FOM) & Academic Advisor on Pharmacology to the Faculty of Pharmacy (FOP).

Prof. Förstermann’s career includes notable international experience, having worked at Abbott Laboratories in Illinois, USA, alongside Nobel laureate Ferid Murad between 1989 and 1993. During this time, he also held an adjunct professorship at Northwestern University. He has an MD/PhD in pharmacology from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, where he also pursued post-doctoral research.

His contributions to pharmacology have been widely recognized. Over the years, Prof. Förstermann has received numerous awards, including the Goedecke/Warner Lambert Research Award and the Fritz Kuelz Award in Pharmacology. He also received a prestigious Heisenberg Scholarship from the German Research Council.

In recent years, Prof. Förstermann’s accomplishments continued to earn recognition. In 2014, he was awarded the Rodolfo Paoletti Medal for European Pharmacology, and in 2017, he received the Ariëns Award from the Dutch Pharmacological Society for his pioneering work in molecular pharmacology.

Prof Förstermann’s appointment was made official during a ceremony today, at the end of a three-day visit to the university.

During his stopover at QIU, he visited our industry-mirroring facilities at the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy as well as Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun—where so many of our budding healthcare professionals sharpen their skills.

Prof. Förstermann also joined dialogue sessions with our students and staff, sharing his insight on the medical and pharmaceutical fields.
