What’s better than winning a national competition? Winning a national competition with an idea that makes life better for people with disabilities.
Bachelor of Environmental Technology (Hons) student Yap Kai Yan did just that after his team was named as Inclusion Track National Champion for L’Oréal’s Brandstorm 2022 competition!
Kai Yan is part of the three-person Team Spectrum, along with his friends from Universiti Malaya (UM) and the University of Nottingham Malaysia.

The Brandstorm competition is divided into three tracks—Inclusion, Green, and Tech, and over 270 students from around Malaysia competed for the top prize. This included innovators from institutions like UM, the University of Nottingham, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi MARA, and many more.
Kai Yan and his teammates catapulted to the top of the Inclusion track thanks to their idea for a more inclusive beauty store.
“We basically pitched an idea for a store that provides a better physical experience for people with disabilities—who are often neglected,” said Kai Yan.

Unfortunately, we can’t reveal too many details because the competition isn’t over yet for Team Spectrum.
After winning the national accolade, the trio is working on a video presentation for the semifinal stage of the Brandstorm International competition. The details will only be published during the voting period of the competition from May 2 to May 8.
“We’ll need votes from the public, so we’re counting on everyone’s help!” said Kai Yan.
Wonderful work Kai Yan. We’ll be cheering for you all the way!
