Innovations in the field of special needs education have the ability to transform a child’s life for the better. Creative solutions for the unique challenges they face can be a game-changer, empowering them for the future.
QIU is proud to announce that another trailblazing learning innovation has captured the spotlight, after a team representing the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Centre of Research & Innovation recently won a bronze medal at the ULUL ALBAB Innovation Competition Exhibition at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).
The team of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tilagavati Subramaniam (team leader), Dr Ruuhina binti Mohd Sani, Noor Eleena Nordin, and Shamanee Murthi created the AR Phonics research project, which showcased an innovative approach to teaching phonics using Augmented Reality (AR) technology for children with speech delays.
Competing institutions included Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Universiti Malaya (UM), IPG Raja Melewar, Politeknik Jeli Kelantan, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (Indonesia), and Universiti Malaysia Pahang.
The project drew plaudits for its method of using interactive and immersive AR experiences to create a more engaging learning environment that directly addresses speech development needs.
This achievement highlights QIU’s commitment to advancing educational practices for children with special needs, marking the team’s second recognition in the competition for a similar innovation adapted for a new lesson.
Last month, four academics bagged the champion title for “Best Exhibitor Award” at the Intervarsity Corporate-Academia Symposium (ICAS’24) & Pedagogy Innovators Showcase Competition (PISC), hosted by Sunway University.
The championship team comprised the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tilagavati Subramaniam (team leader), Assoc.
