As we do our part to break the infection chain of Covid-19, many of us have been isolated indoors away from those important to us.
In such an unprecedented situation, it is vital to take care of our mental health – and the Quest Medical Society (QMS) held a special webinar to help QIU’s staff and students do exactly that.
Conducted by Associate Professor and Head of Department Psychological & Behavioural Medicine Associate Professor Dr Bilbir Kaur, the webinar was attended by hundreds of staff and students from different faculties and departments as well as invited members of the public.
“It has been nearly two months since the MCO and the subsequent CMCO were put in place. Obviously it has been hard for all of us to cope in some way or other; both on professional and personal fronts,” said Dr BIlbir.
“We wanted to reach out to everyone and give them a platform to talk and connect to people who are going through something similar.”
The webinar covered some of the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and how they affected our students. The effects included a feeling of isolation, financial issues and concern about family members who were at higher risk of contracting the disease.
To combat this, the doctors underlined the importance of self-care strategies like focusing on routines and engaging positively with family and friends.
Participants were also advised on the importance of meditation and physical exercise, especially to combat overthinking during this time.
The talk was yet another example of QIU’s commitment to ensuring the wellbeing of our student and staff population. The University has also launched a Careline connecting counsellors with students who need someone to talk to during this difficult time.
All in all, it was an engaging event that had a lasting positive impact on everyone who participated. Kudos to the QMS!
