It is said that art speaks what words are unable to explain.
And for QIU medical student Vrisha Ranjith, her artwork has sent a powerful message while also putting the university in the limelight.
The Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Batch 14 student won first place in a Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative Infographic Competition 2021, organised by Taylor’s University’s School of Medicine.
Vrisha’s post was judged to be the best amidst competition from Taylor’s University, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) Manipal University College Malaysia, AIMST University, and MAHSA University.
The competition was open to all current students from Malaysian medical schools, and the entries were judged by a panel from the Malaysian National Chapter of the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).
As an added bonus, her artwork (above) will also be shared with the World Health Organisation (WHO), which is leading the worldwide Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative.
Vrisha said that she was inspired by the goal of raising awareness of this deadly disease.
“Cervical cancer causes a lot of deaths in women, starting from their teens to their ’20s. My main goal was to spread the word to young females, especially those in rural areas, that screening is necessary for cervical cancer,” she said.
Vrisha noted that cervical cancer screening was an essential part of a woman’s routine health care, as most cases of cervical cancer were caused by infection with the human papillomavirus.
“Routine cervical screening greatly reduces high-risk HPV to monitor abnormal cell changes. Abnormal changes can be treated so the chances of cervical cancer are minimised. So this simple optional screening can keep women safe and healthy.” she said.
Vrisha also thanked her lecturers and the university for their guidance and support.
We’re so proud of Vrisha’s efforts to raise awareness on such an important cause. And of course, we’re super proud of her win as well. Heartiest congratulations once again, Vrisha!
