QIU Joins State Gov’t Sungai Perak Riverbank Restoration

As a strong advocate of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, QIU is always excited to collaborate with different institutions who share our goal of conserving the environment.

The University was proud to join the Perak state government’s Sungai Perak River Restoration programme – a noble initiative that will see a massive tree-planting exercise carried out on a 5km expanse of land in Kuala Kangsar.

The programme, which was officiated by the Sultan of Perak, His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah yesterday, will also see the area cultivated as the Kuala Kangsar Royal Botanical Gardens.

The ceremony was held in conjunction with the state-level celebration of the International Day of Forests.

Also present to grace the ceremony was the Raja Muda Perak, Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa and Raja Puan Besar Perak, Raja Nazhatul Shima Sultan Idris Shah; the Raja DiHilir Perak, Raja Iskandar Dzulkarnain Sultan Idris Shah and the Raja Puan Muda Perak, Tunku Soraya Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah; as well as Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu and various other state dignitaries.

Representing QIU at the’s officiating ceremony were QIU Registrar Mr Muhammad MG Omar, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Prof Dr Chan Nee Nee, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Prof Dr Vilasini Pillai, and several of our students and academics.

So far, many different organisations and agencies have joined forces to plant 1,000 trees in this area. From this total, QIU’s students and lecturers have planted 250 trees.

QIU’s participation is part of the University’s long-term goal to plant a million trees in Perak – a project which will be carried out in different phases.

Phase One saw 250 trees planted along Sungai Sayong, while Phase Two saw another 200 trees planted on the banks of Sungai Kinta – right here in Ipoh.

We look forward to embarking on more tree-planting exercises in the near future, as we continue our efforts to create a greener planet for future generations.
