FST Deputy Dean, Lecturer Produce Face Shields for Covid-19 Frontliners

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen an incredible outpouring of community support and volunteerism as people from all over the world join forces to help each other.

We’re extremely proud that our own Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Prof Dr Sim Yee Wai has joined this effort by producing 3-D printed face shields for healthcare front-liners in Perak.

Dr Sim is part of TeaMa, a face shield 3D printing community that has been mobilised to aid the ongoing efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19.

The group connects front-liners who need to order these items with volunteers who can create the single-use disposable personal protective equipment (PPE). At the same time, members of the public can also make contributions to the cause.

“I joined a sub-group of TeaMa that focuses on Perak. On behalf of QIU, we have supplied 20 pieces of these face shields to Ipoh’s Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun,” said Dr Sim.

“I was also assisted by the School of Computing’s senior lecturer Mr Tay Yen Pei, who helped to relocate the printer to my house and send me the necessary materials.”

“The goal is to provide face shields to as many hospitals and clinics in Perak as we can. They are doing so much for our community and it is only right that we do our part as well.”

Dr Sim also expressed his appreciation to Chief Operating Officer Nicholas Goh and the University for supporting the effort.

So far, the TeaMa website has logged nearly 44,000 face shield requests with 143 volunteers who have 3D printers. Over RM 42,000 in donations have been collected.

Hats off to Dr Sim for his selfless contributions and efforts to address the demand for PPE.  You are an inspiration, sir!
