The intricacies of communication research were put under the academic spotlight, as QIU’s School of Communication organised an online colloquium titled ‘Communication Research: Tips from the Experts‘ last week.
Participants from public and private higher learning institutions throughout Malaysia attended the colloquium, which saw four distinguished and experienced academic speakers sharing their expertise.
Moderated by our own lecturer Ms Auni Mohammed, the colloquium featured speakers like Associate Professor Dr Ng Miew Luan, Head of QIU’s School of Communication in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Dr Ng got the ball rolling by sharing her tips to kickstart a final year research project – an incredibly helpful topic for the students.
Next, Assistant Professor Dr Tan Huey Pyng from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman took the virtual stage with her topic “Positioning Communication in Social Science” – which guided the students through the institutionalisation of communication study in Malaysia and the United States.
The participants then heard from Dr Wan Puspa Melati, senior lecturer from Taylor’s University who spoke on qualitative research, sharing her experiences conducting in-depth interviews with hearing-impaired respondents using sign language.
Finally, Mr Chan Tak Jie from SEGi University explained quantitative research from a methodological approach perspective.
Dr Ng said it was indeed fantastic to have such insightful research experts sharing their perspectives in the field of communication research.
“Communication research is not only a compulsory subject, but it is also a vital part of communications. It allows you to form a larger picture of communication and media, and how they relate to society,” she said.
“It helps to enrich the corpus of knowledge in communication studies, besides providing solutions for communication-related problems and explaining the related phenomena.”
