Akshaya V: Culture, Colour, Celebration

Every year, we’ve come to expect big things from the QIU Hindu Society’s Akshaya International event and this year’s festivities certainly didn’t disappoint.

The celebration returned last Saturday, bringing the usual whirlwind of colour, joy and tradition to Ipoh’s YRSK Hall.

Organised by QIU’s Hindu Society, this year’s event continued the usual mix of delicious traditional food, cultural games, and jaw-dropping performances from students and local superstars alike.

This year, the star power was provided by local artistes Psychomantra and Craankstar, who thrilled the crowd with their electrifying talent.

Participants competed in five fascinating games, including Clay Art, Kolam Art, Sugarcane Eating, Saree and Vesthi Draping, and a Pottu-on-Point competition

As always, the event received wonderful support from the local community and the university. On hand to officiate the event was QIU Council member Tan Sri S.Veerasingam, who was also joined by QIU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Raman Narayanasamy, QIU Chief Operating Officer Nicholas Goh and QIU Registrar Muhammad MG Omar.

Congratulating the organisers on the event, Veerasingam underlined the importance of embracing the diverse cultures in Malaysia.

“All religion teaches us to be good and respect one another. If we conduct ourselves by following the principles of the Rukun Negara, there will be no problems.

“The future is in the hands of today’s students, so work together to become someone great,” he said.

Dr Raman, meanwhile, praised the strong backing given to the Akshaya event, since its inaugural iteration five years ago.

“Tan Sri Veerasingam has been a great supporter of this initiative since the beginning and we are greatly appreciative of this. I must also point out the strong support given by the COO Mr Nicholas and the University’s management,” he said.

“Today’s event and the support it gathered shows how closely-knit we are as a university.
