Faculty of Computing and Engineering Sparks STEM Passion Through Community Outreach Programmes

QIU’s Faculty of Computing and Engineering (FCE) strengthened its commitment to nurturing STEM interests within the community by organising a series of impactful outreach programmes involving local schools in Ipoh.

In recent months, FCE engaged students from SMK Bercham and SMJK Ave Maria Convent through hands-on workshops designed to introduce young learners to the exciting world of programming, electronics, and digital innovation — an effort that reflects QIU’s ongoing passion for cultivating future-ready talent in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

At SMK Bercham, our academics organised an Arduino Training Workshop under the PROGRAM MOSTI-STI 1003 initiative. Conducted by School of Engineering lecturers Ms. Tareenjit Kaur Dhillon, Ms. Norhidayah Ahmad, and Mr. Chelladurai Sinkaram, the workshop engaged Form 2 and Form 3 students in immersive learning activities involving electronics, coding, and mini project prototyping.

The students gained hands-on exposure to Arduino fundamentals and basic programming concepts while developing practical problem-solving skills through interactive exercises. Beyond technical knowledge, the workshop aimed to ignite curiosity and inspire students to explore future studies and hobbies related to electronics, robotics, and programming.

Meanwhile, the faculty conducted another STEM outreach initiative titled “Basic Visual Programming Using Visual Studio” at SMJK Ave Maria Convent. Led by Nur Syaheera Sulaiman, the two-hour workshop introduced students to visual programming, user interface design, and logical problem-solving using Visual Studio.

The programme provided students with practical exposure to real-world digital applications while encouraging them to consider opportunities in computing, software development, engineering, and other STEM-related fields. Importantly, the workshop also highlighted the role of women in technology, empowering female students to participate actively in digital learning and innovation.

These initiatives align closely with QIU’s broader mission to promote accessible, inclusive, and engaging STEM education within the community. The university has consistently championed similar outreach efforts, including previous programmes focused on empowering young women in STEM education at schools such as SMJK Ave Maria Convent.

By bringing university expertise directly into schools, QIU aims to bridge classroom learning with real-world applications while inspiring the next generation of innovators, engineers, and digital leaders. Such outreach programmes also strengthen meaningful partnerships between higher education institutions and schools, creating valuable opportunities for knowledge-sharing and community engagement.

Through initiatives like these, QIU reaffirms its dedication to educational empowerment and its belief that nurturing STEM interest among young learners today is essential for building a more innovative and sustainable future tomorrow.
