Psychology Student Shines at National Public Speaking Competition

Public speaking ranks among the most valuable soft skills any student can master, as it helps with career development, confidence, and critical thinking.

QIU encourages all our students to improve their speaking skills, and we’re glad to report that we’ve added to our sterling oratory track record!

Psychology student Jasreena Rais added another feather to the university’s cap by securing second place in the open category of the National Public Speaking Competition 2023, organized by The Speech Academy Penang.

Supported by the Ministry of Education, the grand finale unfolded at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)’s Dewan Budaya. Jasreena’s category saw her competing against participants from UiTM and UTAR, among others. The entire competition featured over 900 participants, with 25 making it to the final showdown.

Under the “Inspiring Speech,” theme centred around the quote, “Be the change you want to see in the world,” Jasreena related her speech to her Psychology major, addressing the critical issue of substance abuse and advocating for positive change.

Jasreena said, “I am truly grateful for this achievement, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the knowledge, guidance, and care provided by my lecturers at QIU. My intention wasn’t solely to win a prize, but to share the invaluable lessons I’ve learned during my classes and inspire others to embark on a journey of positive change, much like how QIU has guided me.”

This accolade was another triumph for the undergrad, who was selected for the esteemed Global UGRAD Exchange Programme earlier this year. The programme offers undergraduate students from over 60 countries a chance to study in the United States for a semester or academic year at a U.S. college or university.

Heartfelt congratulations on your achievement, Jasreena!
