Environmental Technology Postgrads Win 3rd Place in National Competition With Plastic Waste Video

It’s been difficult keeping up with all the winning we’ve been doing over the past few weeks, but guess what—we’ve got another accolade to shout about!

Master of Science in Environmental Technology students Turkeswari Uvajaran and Nur Hanis Zulkernain continued our award streak after they grabbed 3rd place at the Malaysian Petrochemicals Association-Plastic Resins’ Producers Group (MPA-PRPG) video/multimedia competition for Malaysian university students.

The duo had to overcome some tough competition in the form of 33 entries from universities all over Malaysia-including Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Johor, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Universiti Malaysia Perlis, University Malaysia Pahang and University Teknologi Petronas.

Their video submission (which you can check out here) showcased one of QIU’s exciting innovations—using plastic waste to produce construction materials like paving blocks.

It’s an ingenious solution to the ever-growing problem of plastic waste; finding a realistic alternative use for a material that would otherwise pile up across the planet.

We wanted to demonstrate that plastic waste has the potential for being reused and repurposed into a valuable product. At the same time, it can be a good alternate for conventional cement and clay to produce construction materials,” said Turkeswari.

“We were really happy and proud that our video was selected as one of the top 3 winners among 33 entries. We really appreciate the help and guidance from our faculty and QIU as well,” added Nur Hanis.

Well done to both of you for giving us two reasons to be proud. Not only did you finish in the top 3, but you also did so with an invention that could help save the planet. Kudos!
