· Distinguished crime experts explain the reasons why we fall into the trap of breaking the law.
It’s something all of us wonder when we hear about a horrible crime. How could anyone do such a thing? What could trigger someone to do that?
At QIU, we love answering society’s important questions and enlightening the public. To do so, the Faculty of Social Sciences brought together two noted crime experts to share their knowledge at an exclusive webinar titled ‘The Monster Within: When Ordinary People Turn to Crime’.
The experts were Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Assoc. Prof. Dr Geshina Ayu Mat Saat—one of only seven PhD-holding criminologists in Malaysia; and Dr Chung Kai Li, Deputy Head of Psychology at the University of Reading Malaysia.
Moderated by the Dean of QIU’s Faculty of Social Sciences Prof. Dr Chan Nee Nee, the discussion shed light on the factors that cause people to ‘break bad’. Here’s Prof. Dr Geshina explaining more:
Meanwhile, Dr Chung provided her answer to the age-old question: is criminal behaviour caused by nature or nurture? Is it inherited or brought about by a negative environment?
The experts also explained the differences between criminology and forensic psychology, while shining a light on the meanings and misconceptions of their disciplines. As you would expect with such an interesting topic, the questions were flying in from the audience.
We’d like to thank our amazing speakers Assoc. Prof. Dr Geshina and Dr Chung for a truly illuminating session. Congratulations to Prof. Dr Chan and her team from the FSS for organising yet another informative event!
