SMK Ayer Tawar Triumphs as STEM Quiz Promotes Science Appreciation

Technological innovation has never been more important to the development of societal and economic growth—and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education will have a vital role to play.

To truly create a holistic enthusiasm for STEM among our young people, we need more activities that make learning fun.

In the spirit of creating entertaining education activities, our Faculty of Integrated Life Sciences (FILS) and Faculty of Computing and Engineering (FCE) joined forces with Jabatan Pendidikan Perak, Unisem (M) Berhad, Sibelco Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and CRS Eviro Sdn Bhd to bring back the QIU STEM Quiz!

This year’s event brought together young scientific minds from across the state, inspiring participants to deepen their scientific understanding and innovate for the future.

Aimed at upper secondary school students, the quiz saw participation from 45 schools across 11 districts. The preliminary round, conducted online on September 25, determined the top 12 teams that advanced to the grand finale held at our campus on October 26.

The final showdown was a fierce battle of knowledge, with SMK Ayer Tawar ultimately claiming victory, taking home the champion’s trophy and a cash prize of RM 1,200. SM Sains Raja Tun Azlan Shah earned the first runner-up spot, while SMK Methodist (ACS) Sitiawan and SMK Convent, Taiping rounded out the top four. In addition to the awards for the top teams, all participants received e-certificates in recognition of their efforts and enthusiasm.

The grand finale was officiated by En. Ahmad Mahfuz Najhan bin Shahar Murshid, Ketua Penolong Pengarah, Unit Sains Sosial, Sektor Pembelajaran, Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Perak. His presence underscored the importance of fostering STEM education and encouraging young minds to develop their scientific curiosity and problem-solving skills.

Congratulations to all the participants and keep up your passion in the scientific realm! We look forward to seeing your talents blossom!
