Quest International University Perak (QIUP) Welcomes The Global Debating Community

Quest International University Perak (QIUP) welcomes the global debating community to the QIUP World Universities Peace Invitational Debate (also known as QIUP WUPID 2017), as they arrive to Ipoh from December 08 to December 12, 2017.

The debates will take place at QIUP, with the grand finals to happen on the evening of December 12, 2017 (Tuesday) at Weil Hotel, Ipoh.

QIUP will receive a total of 150 participants, consisting of university debaters, adjudicators, registered observers and volunteers. Universities that will be taking part are University of Oxford, University of Sydney, London School of Economics, University of Melbourne, Ateneo De Manila University, Australian National University, National University of Singapore, International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi MARA, and many more.

Shoaib Rahim, former university debater whom participated at WUPID in 2007 and 2008; and currently the Deputy Mayor of Kabul said, “There are no bin rooms in WUPID, you get the top teams from the get go and all throughout, and enjoy the intense high-level debates and adjudication. A joy to take part in, a joy to watch and most importantly a tournament to brag about even after 10 years. WUPID is as classy as debate tournaments can get.

In a comment made during the launch of QIUP WUPID in August (2017), the Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh remarked, “The Ministry is pleased to support debating activities. Oratory activities like debating are in line with the role of the Ministry in creating a wholesome graduate. Debating is able to equip our students to think critically and constructively. These qualities are essential especially in the age where fake news and viral misinformation is rampant. Debating enables our students to approach issues objectively, while having a constructive discourse which are both intellectual and fair.”

QIUP Council Member, Zaheer Merchant said, “We view debating as an important tool in innovation as it has proven to be a significant element for policy-design and decision-making. We recognise that freedom of innovation is a key driver for economic growth, and as Malaysia continues to move towards a high-value, knowledge-based economy with a strong focus on the services and manufacturing sectors, the culture of debating will play a critical role that not only raises the overall efficiency and productivity of the nation, but also preserving the moral and ethical standards of it’s collective society.” QIUP WUPID 2017 is a Public-Private-Civil Society initiative spearheaded by Quest International University, Perak (“QIUP”), supported by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE), in collaboration with the Malaysian Institute for Debate and Public Speaking (“MIDP”) and various partners from the public and private sectors, as well as civil society organisations.
