QIU Sport Stars Shine to Win Basketball Gold and Futsal Bronze in Intervarsity Contests

As a university, our job is to support our students in their quest for all-round excellence—both in the academic and co-curricular realms. We’re never prouder when our students maximise their potential and elevate above their peers in competition.

One of those coveted moments of glory came today when our varsity basketball and futsal teams notched up champion and 2nd runners-up spots respectively in two intervarsity competitions.

This latest victory adds to our tradition of sterling performances in academic and non-academic competitions, be it on the state, national, or international level.

QIU’s Basketball Eagles put in a dominant display throughout the UTP Hoopmania Inter-University Championship, showing their class against six teams from Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), UniKL RMCP, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), and Multimedia University (MMU).

While they notched up some powerful displays in the early rounds—including a stunning 76-22 win over UNITEN—they saved their best for last as they crushed the home team UTP A 73-27 in a cracking final.

And of course, they weren’t the only Eagles to soar, as our futsal team carved out an excellent 3rd-place finish at the MASISWA North Zone tournament among a field of 18 private institutions of higher learning.

After falling to UTP in a close semi-final battle, our boys picked themselves up and put in a gallant, determined show to beat Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah (UNISHAMS) 2-0.

Our basketball and futsal squads were part of a larger QIU sporting contingent that represented us with pride and distinction at three intervarsity competitions this week. Also carrying the QIU flag into battle were our track and field, badminton, and chess teams.

The athletics team will be competing at the Varsity Track and Field Championship at Ipoh’s Stadium Indera Mulia on 8 March.

Well done to all our Eagles—we’re so proud of the achievements you’ve carved into history, as well as the determined efforts you’ve put into getting there! Congratulations!
