At QIU, we take immense pride in our continued community outreach work under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) banner, which has impacted a wide range of local communities.
One of the pillars of our outreach initiatives is our workshops, which aim to promote long-term well-being among underserved communities.
Recently, the latest iteration of our Community-Based Health and Wellness Initiative brought practical knowledge and delicious solutions to the residents of Flat Harmoni, Buntong, with a hands-on “Nutrition and Healthy Eating” workshop.
This initiative, a collaborative effort between QIU, Klinik Kesihatan Buntong, and the Perak Women for Women Society (PWW), targeted residents of Flat Harmoni Buntong.
The objective of the workshop, held on campus, was to raise awareness about balanced diets and effective meal planning, particularly in the context of preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
The morning began with a thought-provoking talk titled “Kepentingan Memahami Ramuan dan Bahan Aditif dalam Makanan” (The Importance of Understanding Ingredients and Additives in Food), delivered by our own Dr Bhupinder Kaur. This session educated participants on how to interpret food labels and identify harmful additives, empowering them to make better dietary choices. Participants then engaged in a fun, hands-on activity focused on food ingredients.
At 10:15 AM, QIU’s Dr Hazliana took the stage with a talk on “Pemakanan Sihat” (Healthy Eating), which further explored the components of a balanced diet and the role nutrition plays in disease prevention and overall well-being.

Another highlight of the workshop was a demonstration led by our Prof Dr Ong Khang Wei, where participants made healthy wraps based on the various ingredients provided. They had to choose the right ones based on what they had learnt earlier, before they were tasked with explaining their choices. The session offered practical tips that the community members could bring back into their kitchens.
Following the success of this second event, the Community-Based Health and Wellness Initiative is scheduled to continue on 23 August with its next workshop, focusing on physical activity and exercise. This session aims to encourage regular movement as a vital part of a healthy lifestyle.
