How Do You Hold an International Concert When Everyone’s Indoors?

Well, you ask the QIU Student Affairs Division and the International Students Society.

One of our coolest events in 2019 was the Voices of Culture celebration, organised by our TESL students. And after the tragic Covid-19 pandemic struck, this year’s hotly-awaited follow-up looked like it may fall through.

But you should never count out the creativity of our QIU family. Instead of falling apart, the Virtual Voices of Culture 2.0 returned yesterday night, bigger and more international than before!

The event was held virtually on Google Meet, featuring exciting performances from across the world and a captivating fashion show.

Last year’s event was headlined by our students, but this year’s edition managed to go even further thanks to performances from our students’ siblings, friends and families from across the globe.

Student Affairs Director Assoc Prof Dr Gurdip Kaur said the concert welcomed performers and viewers from as far as England, Zimbabwe, India, China, Australia and Seychelles.

“We had so many students asking us about VOC and how we could it make it happen this year. We’re blessed to have technology that allows us to bring the world together virtually, so we did just that,” she said.

“The message is simple. We can be separated by geographical distance, but our relationships and friendships will always keep us close together.”

Just like last year, the celebration was held to mark the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, a day observed by the United Nations to deepen the understanding of the values of cultural diversity.

The concert included a Punjabi dhol performance, traditional and contemporary dances, spellbinding musical numbers, and fashion shows displaying cultural outfits from Asia and Africa.

The crowd wrapped up the night in the most fitting way possible with a rendition of ‘We Are The World’.

A big hand for everyone who made the night a success, especially the dedicated STAD team and the International Students Society as well as our star performers. Well done to all of you!
