We’re proud to report that our third-year Bachelor of Computer Science student, Ong Kok Donq, clinched the Best Student Team award at the recently concluded ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit 2025 (AAIMS25) AI Code Fest. His achievement is further proof of the Faculty of Computing and Engineering’s (FCE) commitment to technological innovation and excellence.
Kok Donq’s team ‘Bukit Tinggi’, comprising peers from Universiti Utara Malaysia and Taylor’s University, outperformed over 150 contestants – many of whom were full-stack developers, industry professionals, and AI specialists – to win the top prize in a gruelling two-day contest.
Their winning idea, CARe (with the tagline ‘Faster, Smarter, Fairer Healthcare for Everyone’), is an AI-driven hospital navigator app designed to reduce waiting times at healthcare facilities and create smoother patient experiences, particularly for Malaysia’s older adults.
Key features of the app include identifying the nearest hospital by combining travel and wait-time predictions, enabling an AI-powered pre-consultation chat with patients, generating a doctor-ready summary, and providing seamless QR-based sharing at the hospital front desk.
Themed around ‘Healthcare Reimagined’, the AAIMS25 AI Code Fest was organised by the National AI Office (Ministry of Digital) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Asia School of Business, Hive Global AI, and AI Tinkerers.
Team Bukit Tinggi’s win also earned Kok Donq the rare opportunity to pitch his project to senior government leaders and digital policymakers on the main stage of AAIMS25, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
His success is another ringing endorsement of Quest International University’s (QIU) industry-focused approach to education, which emphasises cross-disciplinary collaboration and creative problem-solving as key to professional development and success.
Recalling his AAIMS25 experience, Kok Donq said that you don’t need to be an expert to win a hackathon. “It is a place for us to network, to learn to think, and to solve problems. I believe our teamwork is what made us stand out. In the future, I hope all QIU students will actively engage in hackathons to boost their skills and portfolios.”
We are proud of FCE for its consistent track record of producing students who challenge themselves on the national stage. Previously, another computer science student emerged victorious in a national hackathon, and Kok Donq himself has continued his excellent form by finishing in the Top 10 at the InnoJam GenAI Hackathon 2025.
For context, the inaugural edition of AAIMS was Southeast Asia’s premier platform for cross-border collaboration, innovation, and investment in artificial intelligence. The summit gathered ASEAN policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, start-ups, and civil society to shape a sustainable, secure, and inclusive AI future for the region.
Accordingly, the AAIMS25 AI Code Fest sought to empower brilliant minds in tackling real-world healthcare challenges and enable local talent to move beyond the passive adoption of AI and step confidently into the role of creators, reflecting Malaysia’s vision of transforming into an ‘AI Nation’ by 2030.
Kudos on your win, Kok Donq! You are part of the new wave of AI-powered professionals vital to the achievement of this national vision. We look forward to watching you grow into a game changer in your field and inspiring others to greatness.
