Exploring the Electronic Nose

You’ve heard of e-wallets, e-sports, and of course e-Q (your favourite QIU news portal). But have you heard of an e-nose?

QIU had the pleasure of hosting University Malaysia Perlis senior lecturer and robotics expert, Dr Ammar Zakaria today, as he delivered a talk on the ‘Advances in the Electronic Nose and its Application in Medicine, Agriculture and the Environment’.

The talk was the latest edition of the Faculty of Science and Technology’s Heart-to-Heart with Science series.

So what is an e-nose? Basically, it’s a device that detects the specific components of an odour and analyses its chemical makeup to identify it. It is made up of mechanisms for chemical detection and pattern recognition.

Dr Ammar, who is also Principal Researcher at Perlis’ Centre of Excellence for Advanced Sensor Technology, shared his expertise on the inner workings of the e-nose, its market and its applications in various sectors.

This included entertainment, fragrance and flavours, food and beverages, environmental monitoring and biomedicine.

He also delved into the differences between the e-nose and the human olfactory systems, before exploring future trends in the e-nose and gas sensor technology.

In the future, we could see the e-nose system used to detect diseases and the air quality in our surrounding environment – something that could prove incredibly useful if the haze returns!

It was an eye-opening talk for everyone who attended, including QIU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Raman Narayanasamy, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Prof Dr Vilasini Pillai, as well as our staff and students.

A big thank you to Dr Ammar for his illuminating talk, and you’re always welcome at QIU!
