“Radiowave Propagation Impairments and Effects on Satellite Links”

ABSTRACT
The performance of radio communication systems in terms of reliability and availability of any radio link depends primarily on the propagation medium between the transmitter and the receiver. Satellite signal propagation above 10 GHz in free space is not only adversely affected by rain but also impaired by other natural phenomena such as gaseous attenuation, cloud and fog attenuation, and scintillation. As the frequency increases, so does the impact of atmospheric conditions on the radio wave propagation, which causes a reduction in quality of the signal in the case of analogue transmission, and an increase in the bit error rate (BER) in the case of digital transmission. It is therefore very imperative when planning for both earth-to-space and terrestrial line-of-sight system links, to make an accurate prediction of rain rate and the corresponding induced rain attenuation along the propagation paths. In this seminar, we will look into the parameters that are affected by propagation impairment factors and discuss why it is necessary to specify the parameters on a statistical basis in order to establish a link margin. Link margin is the additional transmitter power required to overcome signal fade.
About the Presenter
Dr.J.S. Mandeep received his B.Eng. (with honors) and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, and Universiti Sains Malaysia, in 1998 and 2006, respectively. From 2006 up to June 2009, he joined Universiti Sains Malaysia, Georgetown, Malaysia, as a Lecturer. Currently, he works at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi, Malaysia, as an Associate Professor. His areas of specialization are radio wave propagation in satellite communication system, radar, antenna design, RF, and microwave. His has collaborated with the Association of Radio Industries and Business (ARIB), Japan, to analyze the radiowave propagation impairments at Ku‐band in tropical climate using satellite involving countries such as Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, and Fiji. Mandeep has published 150 papers in ISI and SCOPUS journals, most of which are on radio wave propagation. He has reviewed more than 100 articles from various impact factor journals.
