The solution to many societal problems is awareness and education. As a conscientious educational institution, QIU understands its responsibility to spread awareness and inform the local community about important social issues.
Along these lines, the School of Early Childhood Education and Special Needs Education held a Sexuality Awareness Talk today (May 26), targeting at raising awareness on sexual education for children.
We were honoured to welcome the President of the National Early Childhood Intervention Council (NECIC) Dr Wong Woan Yiing, who is also a consultant paediatrician at KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital and a committee member of the Association of the Network for the Needs of Children with Disabilities, Perak (NETWORK).
Her engaging seminar focused on what to teach, how to teach, and whom to teach and was delivered in an interactive manner with the use of examples and case studies.
Dr Wong shared some alarming statistics about the level of sexual education in Malaysia, before highlighting the importance of proper education for people of different backgrounds – regardless of whether they were differently-abled or otherwise.
The topics covered included different ways to teach sexual education to children depending on their ages and comprehensive sexuality education that covers physical biological and social aspects.
The ideas and information shared during the talk were incredibly impactful to the community, especially with the presence of local parents, medical professionals, psychologists, and special needs and early childhood educators at the talk.
QIU Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Raman Narayanasamy, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Prof Dr Tina Lim, and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Dr Alice Lee led a strong turnout from our staff and students as well.
All in all, it was yet another enlightening and fascinating talk at QIU, and we would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Dr Wong and the organisers for making the event an absolute success. We hope to see Dr Wong back at QIU for more illuminating talks!
