Rollicking Run-Up to QIU’s CNY Celebration

Are you ready for the Lunar New Year? We hope you are, because QIU has gone all out to ring in the first CNY celebration of the new decade!

Throughout the month of January, the Department of Student Affairs has been working with clubs and societies from QIU and beyond to bring you a series of fantastic CNY-themed events.

This will culminate in a grand Chinese New Year celebration and dinner on the evening of Jan 22.

On Jan 8, the buildup began with a special ’24 Season’ drum performance from the students of SMJK Poi Lam.

The crowd were wowed by the fierce movements of the drummers as the vibration of their beating drums were felt throughout the Student Centre.

The festive atmosphere was boosted further by the Event Planning Club, who have set up a mini Chinatown district in the Student Centre from Jan 13 to Jan 22. The enterprising students are selling traditional goodies like biscuits, popiah, savoury snacks, oranges and small decorations.

On Jan 15, the action continued with a calligraphy workshop and Taekwondo demonstration at the Student Centre (check out the video below to see the Student Affairs Department’s Liew Chan Siong smashing boards with the Cornerstone Taekwondo club).

On the same day, the Rotaract Club organised an Aikido demonstration conducted by renowned self-defence trainer Melvin Leong, who has been teaching Aikido for more than a decade.

Aikido is a Japanese modern art of self-defence which focuses on harmonising with an opponent’s force rather than meeting it head-on, defending oneself without injuring the attacker. It also helps exponents to lead an active lifestyle and manage stress and violence using a calm and harmonious approach.

Leong, who runs three self-defence schools, taught the students to increase their balance, coordination, reaction time,  flexibility and aerobic conditioning while learning how to defend themselves.

Of course, these events are all building up to QIU’s mega Chinese New Year celebration and dinner – which will be held at the Student Centre on Jan 22 from 5pm.

So what can you expect from next Wednesday’s celebration? It’s a Student Affairs event, so get yourself ready for dance, delicacies and dazzling entertainment!

We’re going to have lion dances, traditional dances, fashion shows, a lucky draw and many many more.

So for those who haven’t gotten your tickets, check out the poster below and book your places now! Gong Xi Fa Cai everyone!
