QIU hosts Rotary Club Of Ipoh’s 54th Inter-school Debate

IN line with its goals of fostering the use of English Language and providing a platform for local youth to express themselves through oral discourse, Quest International University proudly played host to the Rotary Club of Ipoh’s 54th Inter-school Debate Competition.

Eight teams took part in the contest, including SMK Anderson, SMJK Ave Maria Convent, Methodist Girls’ School, SMK Main Convent Ipoh, Tenby Schools Ipoh, SMK St Michael Ipoh, and SMK Methodist (ACS) Ipoh.

After three thrilling days of competition, SMK St Michael Ipoh and SMK Methodist (ACS) Ipoh made it to the finals.

In front of over 100 excited audience members, including QIU Chief Operating Officer Mr Nicholas Goh and Rotary Club of Ipoh President Mr Peter Ng, the teams contested the challenging motion of ‘Small is Better than Big’ with SMK St Michael proposing and SMK Methodist (ACS) Ipoh opposing.

And after a series of superbly presented arguments from both sides, it was SMK Methodist (ACS) Ipoh who walked away with the title 54th Interschool Debate champions, while SMK St Michael was named as first runners-up.

As an added bonus, SMK Methodist (ACS) Ipoh’s first speaker Shaanan Kokiladasan won the award for Best Speaker.

Over the past five decades, the interschool debate has been one of the Rotary Club of Ipoh’s signature events, with many of Ipoh’s professionals and entrepreneurs participating in the debates during their school years.

QIU is proud to have worked with the Rotary Club to host such a thrilling and historic event. Congratulations to the team from SMK Methodist (ACS) Ipoh for their victory and kudos to the participating schools for making this event a success!
