Industry Day Paves Career Paths for Students

When applying for jobs, most graduates have to go through a long process to meet employers who could hold the keys to their future careers – e-mails, phone calls and the nervous long wait.

But earlier this week, QIU’s students and alumni were given the chance to sidestep this process during the University’s annual Industry Day 2019.

Organised by the Career Services division, the day-long event was all about building bridges between our students and the industry – allowing them to connect directly with local and multinational companies from a varied spectrum of fields and disciplines.

More than 1,000 students and alumni took the opportunity to network with over 100 representatives from different industries.

Welcoming the representatives was Chief Operating Officer Nicholas Goh, Registrar Muhammad MG Omar and our Deans and Deputy Deans.

“This day is very important to me. It paves the paths for our students as they are not only here to mingle but to also secure future career prospects,” said Goh.

“Our focus has always gone beyond merely creating graduates. We want to create employees of the future who integrate into their future careers seamlessly,” he said.

In addition to the booths set up by the companies, the event also saw the launch of QIU’s very own Employer Portal – a platform for companies to post employment opportunities that will be accessible to our students.

Another highlight was a forum on employability moderated by Prof. Dr Chan Nee, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The erudite panellists, each bringing decades of expertise in their respective fields, included FinTech Association of Malaysia president Mohammad Ridzuan Abdul Aziz, Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Perak Vice-President Punniamoorthy Nadarajan, and Chua Kuang Eu, Customer Solutions Consultant from JobStreet Malaysia.

Students looking to polish their resumes were also given the chance to take professional photographs at the Buzz Hub studio.

Bachelor of Corporate Communication graduate Lee Jia En said she enjoyed the different services and opportunities to build her career prospects during the event.

“It’s a very nice experience not only for third-year students or graduates but also for juniors as well because they will get some insightful details about the industry that they’re looking into,” she said.
