At the heart of the agreement is a shared vision to tackle the twin challenges of limited arable land and the adverse effects of climate change.

The latest accolade belongs to School of Biological Science senior lecturer Ms Hemalatha Murugaiah, who grabbed the Best Oral Presentation Award at the Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand Growth Triangle (IMTGT) Bioscience Conference 2025.

Over two days, participants engaged in oral and poster presentations, showcasing cutting-edge research and innovative solutions. The event featured the distinctive PechaKucha presentation format, challenging presenters to communicate their ideas concisely and creatively.

This year’s event brought together young scientific minds from across the state, inspiring participants to deepen their scientific understanding and innovate for the future.

The collaboration will focus primarily on the production of bamboo tissue-cultured plantlets
which will be used as biofuel, centring around our custom-built plant tissue culture facility.

The workshop explored the significance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines and how they blend with ‘design thinking’ – an inventive human-centred approach to product ideation and creation.

This initiative will shift the focus from imported agricultural products to locally-grown produce—while also creating jobs for the people of Seychelles and attracting more young people to the farming sector.

The day-long event featured insightful lectures and enriching hands-on activities that both educated participants and inspired them to consider careers in biotechnology.

Timely workshop focused on hydroponics, bio-organic fertilisers, and eco-enzymes as essential to achieving sustainability and core SDGs.
