Advocating sustainability practices is a major agenda for Quest International University Perak (QIU) and the university recently inked a Letter of Intent (LOI) with University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to exchange expertise and work on sustainability projects.
Chief Operating Officer of QIU Mr Nicholas Goh and Director of Borneo Tourism Research Centre, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Professor Dr Jennifer Chan Kim Lian signed the LOI witnessed by QIU’s Dean of Faculty of Business and Management Professor Dr. Loke Siew Phaik and Associate Professor Dr Awangku Hassanal Bahar form the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, UMS.
The signing ceremony was followed by a half day seminar titled “Towards Sustainable Tourism in Malaysia”. The tourism industry is a major contributor to Malaysia’s economy, and applying sustainable tourism practices will only benefit the industry in the long-term.
This seminar brought together four expert speakers to share their insight, research, and experiences in the field of sustainable tourism. They discussed how sustainability principles – environment, economic, and socio-cultural can be incorporated in our efforts to improve Malaysia’s tourism industry.
The speakers were Professor Dr Jennifer Chan Kim Lian – Director of Borneo Tourism Research Centre, UMS who spoke on the topic “Issues and Challenges face in Sustainable Tourism Development in Malaysia” while Dr Sofiah Kadar Khan – Associate Professor, QIU who shared her insights on “Organisation Citizenship Behaviours towards Sustainability of an Organisation.
Next up was Dr Awangku Hassanal Bahar Pengiran Bagul, Associate Professor, UMS spoke about Ecotourism and Sustainability in Malaysia. Rounding off the esteemed panel of speakers was Dr Subarna Sivapalan, Head, Centre for Social Transformation and Sustainable Lifestyles, Universiti Teknologi Petronas who spoke about Responsible Tourism in the Age of the Anthropocene.
It was indeed a very informational seminar where the audience had the opportunity to gain valuable insights into sustainable tourism practices.
