Throughout all our programmes, QIU has always advocated a balance between classroom-based education and experiential learning based on real-world situations.
Recently, 17 of our Bachelor’s in Special Needs Education students were given the chance to enjoy the real-world learning experience by taking part in the Lemme Learn Inclusion Camp 2019.
For years, social enterprise Lemme Learn has been helping young adults with learning disabilities integrate into society. Their vocational training programme is specially designed to include people with special needs into the community and provide them with the required skills for employment and functional living.
This year’s camp was themed ‘Adventure to the Old Town’ and saw QIU students and LemmeLearn students coming together for three days to explore the beautiful city of Ipoh.
This included an exploration of Ipoh’s fascinating, historic Old Town area and a cave tour of Gua Tempurung’s natural beauty.

The programme gave our students the opportunity to mingle and participate in interesting activities alongside Lemme Learn’s trainees with special needs.
Our students got a first-hand experience of what was required in their future careers as special educators – a job that requires skills, patience and training.

At the end of the camp, our students got more exposure, practical knowledge and experience of dealing with those with children with special needs. They also learned how to respect individual differences and be more empathetic towards others.
“When we include our students in this camp, they learn to accept others and their unique abilities,” said lecturer Dr Divya Rose Peter.
“It helped to build friendship, peer models, problem-solving skills, positive self-image and respect for others.”
We are proud and happy to work together with Lemme Learn, a visionary organisation that shares our commitment to inclusivity. Kudos to everyone involved in this great event!
