Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary field that combines the knowledge of biology, chemistry, medicine, physics, engineering, and mathematics. It involves the use of living organisms together with various modern technologies to improve existing products or to produce new ones for the benefit of mankind and the environment.
Our 3.5-year course Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology (Honours) programme emphasizes current advances in biotechnology that increase agricultural yield, prevent/cure ailments, produce a healthier & cleaner environment and minimise hazardous waste production in industries. Students will be introduced to modern high-end laboratories equipped with the latest Biotechnology instruments. In their final year of studies, a mini-project will be assigned to each student to hone their research, innovation, and problem-solving skills to gain self-confidence during real-world experiences. This will be followed by 6 months of internship at Biotechnology companies or universities as practical training in an actual working environment.
The curriculum, delivered by experienced professional academics and industry experts, will enhance the students’ understanding of Biotechnology and real-life industry-related issues, equipping them with bio-entrepreneurship knowledge, presentation skills, and leadership qualities to succeed in their careers. Students graduating from the Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology (Honours) programme at QIU armed with these additional qualities and their knowledge in the current trends in Biotechnology will be outstanding candidates for even the most challenging of jobs.
Career Prospects:
Career opportunities for young Biotechnologists are broad and promising in the areas of agriculture, healthcare, industry, and others. They include the following positions:
| Matriculation/Foundation* | Pass with a minimum CGPA of 2.00, or its equivalent, and possess SPM with 3 credits in Mathematics, one Science subject and one any other subject, or its equivalent. |
| STPM* | Pass with a minimum of Grade C (GPA 2.00) in any two (2) subjects or its equivalent, and possess SPM with 3 credits in Mathematics, one Science subject and one any other subject, or its equivalent. |
| A – Level* | Pass with a minimum of Grade D in any two (2) subjects and possess SPM with 3 credits in Mathematics, one Science subject and one any other subject, or its equivalent. |
| UEC | Pass with at least grade B in five (5) subjects inclusive of Mathematics and one (1) Science subject |
| Diploma (Level 4, MQF) in a related field | Pass with a minimum CGPA of 2.0 |

As a biotech graduate fluent in four languages, my journey from Quest University Perak to customer service industry has been a blend of scientific expertise and effective communication. My internship in wildlife education at Entopia deepened my understanding of nature and honed my public speaking skills, setting the stage for my career transition. My first job is basically to provide solutions to clients worldwide especially the China market.
While my current focus lies in customer service, my passion for biotech still burns bright, and I anticipate returning to the scientific research world soon.
It’s been a journey that I will cherish for a lifetime. At first, I joined QIU to do my Foundation in Science and later on, I continued with my degree studies in Biotechnology with the vision of getting the best learning experience. From the very beginning, the institute and especially lecturers have been successful in engraving in us the sense of responsibility, curiosity, and the fire to go beyond our capacity. The years that I spent here have helped me grow professionally and personally. I am truly grateful for that.
The Agriculture in Biotechnology program has allowed me to explore and learn a lot in different fields from my undergrad. The wide variety of classes and knowledgeable faculty make me study in a new, interesting, informative, challenging, and rewarding way. The plant subjects will be directly applicable for the rest of my plantation career. The classes and the support that I have received throughout the program allowed me to improve my skills and knowledge at work and at daily basis. The journey at QIU has made me have a wonderful experience and had opportunity to pursue my ambition.
