Dato’ Dr. Amar-Singh HSS

Dato’ Dr Amar-Singh HSS is a Consultant Community Paediatrician & Child and Disability Advocate who previously headed the Clinical Research Centre Perak and served as a senior Consultant Community Paediatrician & Head of the Paediatric Department at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, Ipoh. Dato’ Dr Amar has has a long standing interest in children with disability, family self-help groups, NGOs, child abuse, adolescent counselling, disadvantaged & marginalised children (especially the Orang Asli/Indigenous People) & the development of services for children. He is also the Advisor of the National Early Childhood Intervention Council. He is the Recipient of the Outstanding Asian Paediatrician Award in 2012 and the distinguished SENIA Advocacy Award in 2016. He is also serving as an honorary Senior Fellow at the Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy.

Community intervention, Disability, Injury Prevention, Drowning,Immunisation, Child Abuse, Adolescent issues, Poverty reduction,disadvantaged & marginalised children (especially Orang Asli, IndigenousPeople), Parent Self-help Groups, NGOs, etc. Active in research andpostgraduate paediatric training with >100 local/international researchpublications/reports. He has published a number of books on research, bird watching, child abuse training & cybersafety. He is an active Child Advocate and Disability Advocate.

Previous Notable Positions Held

Dato’ Dr Amar-Singh HSS, Cert Theology (Aust, Hons), MBBS (Mal), MRCP (UK), FRCP (Glasg), MSc Community Paediatrics (Ldn, distinction), is a Consultant Paediatrician. He served the Malaysian civil service for 35 years and led both a regional Paediatric Department and a Clinical Research Centre. He has a long-standing interest in children in the community, disability, family self-help groups, NGOs, child abuse, adolescents, disadvantaged & marginalised children (especially the indigenous). He has assisted the health ministry to revise the child health services and introduced a number of national programmes for children including developmental screening. He has established a number of NGOs and family support groups.

Committee Involvement at National and/or International Levels

He is the advisor for the National Early Childhood Intervention Council (NECIC) and the National Family Support Group for Children & People with Special Needs. With his wife, he also offers spiritual direction and counselling. He is an active child and disability advocate and is the recipient of the “Outstanding Asian Paediatrician Award” 2012 and “SENIA Advocacy Award” 2016. He is also an honorary Senior Fellow at the Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy
