THE MINISTRY OF HIGHER EDUCATION (MOHE) HAS LAUNCHED the FOLLOWING GRANTS for 2022:

GRANT NAMEGRANT DETAILSDEADLINE TO CRIDEADLINE TO MOHEGENERAL APPLICATION CRITERIA

FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH GRANT SCHEME (FRGS)

Fundamental research is basic research that can produce new theories, concepts and ideas shaped by Malaysia for the development of knowledge.

FRGS aims to accelerate the generation of new theories, concepts and ideas that are the catalyst for new discoveries that cross the boundaries of knowledge and innovative creation.

Quantum: RM250,000.00

Project Period: 2-3 years

Output:

3 years project: 1 full time PhD (research) or 2 full time Master (research)

2 years project: 1 full time Master (research)

Proposal must be based on seven (7) research domains as follows:

1)Information and Communication Technology

2) Technology and Engineering

3) Pure and Applied Science

4) Health and Clinical Sciences

5) Social Sciences

6) Literature and Professional Literature

7) Natural and Cultural Heritage

·         Researchers must update and complete the Researcher profile in MyGRANTS and verify by the Centre for Research and Innovation (CRI).

·         Researchers are allowed to submit applications as Project Leader for FRGS and PRGS. However, if both grants have been approved for the year, the Researcher can only lead one(1) research project. The unselected grant will be led by the Next Appointed Leader proposed in the proposal.

·         The Project Leader must complete Performance Report/ Final Report for the projects that have been approved in the previous phase in the MyGRANTS.

·         Open to all full time Academic Staff (Professors, Associate Professors, Senior Lecturers, and Lecturers) with at least Master’s Degree.

·         A permanent/ contract Malaysian Project Leader must have at least one (1) permanent Malaysian co-researcher in the same field of expertise and from the same Institution as the Next Appointed Leader.

·         For permanent/ contract non-Malaysian Project Leader must have at least (1) researcher with permanent Malaysian citizens in the same field of expertise and from the same institutions as the Next Appointed Leader.

·         For new application for those who have been approved by previous FRGS cycle, the project must at least 75% completed in the MyGRANTS system and approved by CRI.

·         Each applicant is only allowed to submit one (1) application per cycle.

PROTOTYPE RESEARCH GRANT SCHEME (PRGS)

Most of the prototype development research results cannot be commercialized as the research results are still in the early stages. PRGS aims to help bridge the gap between the research findings and commercialization for the purpose of technology creation/ new discoveries in line with the needs of the K-Economy and the implementation of the New Economic Model.

Quantum: RM500,000.00

Project Period: 1-2 years

Output:

At least one (1) working prototype that meets the approved criteria and achieving TRL 3-5

MOHE Grants Guidelines

Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI)

Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI) has introduced five new multimillion research and development (R&D) funds as an initiative to boost the use of disruptive, high technology in the country. The five new fund schemes — the Strategic Research Fund (SRF), Technology Development Fund 1 (TeD 1), TeD 2, Bridging Fund (BGF) and Applied Innovation Fund (AIF) — are offered under the Program Dana Pemacu Teknologi Strategik, also known as PEMACU and a grant to combating COVID 19- ‘MOSTI Combating Covid-19 Fund’.

 

MOSTI Grants that can be applied by Institute of Higher Leaning (IHL):

 

  • Technology Development Fund 1
    • Technology Development Fund 1(TeD 1) is open to researchers and companies interested in implementing research and development projects (R&D) to develop the concepts related to technology design, processes or products that have the potential to be commercialised
    • Quantum and project duration: RM1, 000,000 and 24 months
    • Technology Readiness Level: TRL 2 – 4
    • Project leader need to be a Malaysian but can involve project members from the international organization or expatriates working in the same institution.

 

  • Technology Development Fund 2
    • Technology Development Fund 2(TeD 2) is open to researchers and companies interested in implementing research and development projects (R&D) for continuing the concepts development related to technology design, processes or products towards commercialisation to reduce valley of death.
    • Quantum and project duration: RM3, 000,000 and 36 months
    • Technology Readiness Level: TRL 4 – 7
    • Project leader can be a non-Malaysian provided the work permit is valid throughout the period of project implementation and project members must be Malaysians with the same field of expertise and from the same institution.

 

  • Bridging Fund
    • Bridging fund is reducing the valley of death between the pre-phase commercialization to commercialisation and increase the technology readiness level of R&D products in order to penetrate the market.
    • Quantum and project duration: RM4,000,000 and 36 months
    • Technology Readiness Level: TRL 7 – 9
    • Project leader need to be a Malaysian but can involve project members from the international organization or expatriates working in the same institution.

 

  • Strategic Research Fund
     
    • A top-down initiative for the development of strategic technology and innovation leading toward commercialisation and solving peoples’ problems through the Malaysia Grand Challenge
    • Quantum and project duration: RM15, 000,000 and 36 months
    • Technology Readiness Level: TRL 3 – 9
    • Project leader who is a Malaysian can involve project members from the International organisation or expatriates working in the same institution OR Project leader can be a non-Malaysian provided the work permit is valid throughout the period of project implementation and project members must be Malaysians with the same field of expertise and from the same institution.

 

  • MOSTI Combating Covid-19 Fund
    • The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) welcomes all Malaysians to submit innovative proposals to combat the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • Quantum and project duration: RM3, 000,000 and 36 months
    • Technology Readiness Level: TRL 2 onwards
    • Project leader need to be a Malaysian but can involve expatriates working in the same institution.

Public-Private Research Network (PPRN)

The Ministry of Higher Education has opened the application of the Public-Private Research Network (PPRN) 2.0 grant for Cycle 1/2022.

 

PPRN 2.0 is an initiative of MOHE to foster strategic cooperation between industry and academia, with the support of the Ministry and other government agencies, to increase productivity and strengthen economic growth through matching grants for innovative projects that are demand-driven and have commercial potential.

 

Scope: 

  1. Product Innovation: to improve or add value to existing products, especially industry-based technology or towards certification.
  2. Process Innovation: to improve the production process products, source components; warehouse; logistics; method delivery or services to coordinate as well as making it more efficient and effective in line with the development of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (The Fourth Industrial Revolution – IR 4.0).

Newton-Ungku Omar Fund

How the Newton Fund works

  • The Fund is being delivered by 7 UK delivery partners in collaboration with funders in 17 active partnering countries.
  • They develop and run calls, allocate and manage the money they receive as part of the Newton Fund.

About the Newton-Ungku Omar Fund representatives in Malaysia

 

The Newton-Ungku Omar Fund in-country team is based at the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur and is responsible for:

 

  • Representing UK delivery partners and UK government’s interests in funder-to-funder/government-to-government discussions
  • Facilitating the establishment and delivery of programmes under Newton-Ungku Omar Fund, in collaboration with Malaysian partners

Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC) Industry Linkage Fund

 

  • The MRC Industry Linkage Fund is a funding programme for the Malaysian rubber products industry to collaborate with universities and research institutions on research projects which have the potential to increase Malaysia’s exports of rubber products and enhance the industry’s competitiveness in the global market place.
  • The MRC Industry Linkage Fund provides a platform for the industry to leverage on the strengths and expertise of public and private universities in Malaysia, as well as Malaysian research institutes to undertake market-driven research which will benefit the industry in terms of innovation as well as research and development (R&D).
  • The programme aims to strengthen rubber – university/research institution linkages in Malaysia for the development of the rubber products industry.
  • The MRC Industry Linkage Fund was officially launched by Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities on 26 September 2017.

Priority Areas

  • The focus of the programme will be on projects that have the potential to improve competitiveness of Malaysian rubber products in the global market. Priority areas and products for research are as follows:
  • Latex based products

MAKNA Cancer Research Award

About

The MAKNA Cancer Research Award was initiated in the year 2001 to encourage and recognise the importance of research and development by local scientists in advancing knowledge that is geared towards helping cancer patients and discovering potential cures for the disease. Focusing on research is in line with the MAKNA mission, which is to mobilise all resources to provide curative, preventive, research and support services to cancer patients and families, high-risk groups and the general public.

 

Research Award

MAKNA offers 3 research awards per year with the value of each award not exceeding RM 30,000. The award cannot be used to purchase equipment, to employ salaried personnel, to attend conference or to pay for publication fee. The project must be carried out in Malaysia and completed within 2 years.

 

Eligibility

Application is open to all Malaysian citizens with a basic degree below 40 years of age, residing in Malaysia and interested in cancer research. Students who are pursuing their postgraduate degrees are encouraged to apply.

 

Application Requirements & Procedure

  • All applications must be submitted online through the ASM Awards and Recognition system at mytopscientists.org
  • The research proposal may be downloaded from the ASM Awards and Recognition system. Application with the wrong or outdated research proposal will not be accepted;
  • Any resubmission from previous application should be revised and updated.
  • A Turnitin or any plagiarism report must be submitted with the application.
  • All required information should be stated clearly and concisely.
  • The complete application documents comprised of the followings:
  • Completed Application Form (Comprised of Section A: Knowledge Generation, Section B: Knowledge Dissemination and Section C: Impact of Research Output);
  • Compilation of complete and updated MAKNA Research Proposal and as well as Turnitin or plagiarism report in one (1) pdf file; and;.

Dr. Ranjeet Bhagwan Singh (RBS) Research Grant

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and Academy Science of Malaysia (ASM) have opened the application of the Dr. Ranjeet Bhagwan Singh (RBS) Research Grant 2022 to undertake medical or biomedical research.

 

Application Deadline:18 March 2022 at 23:59

 

Quantum: RM50,000.00

 

Scopes

  1. The maximum amount of RM50,000.00 per award.
  2. The grant awarded is in the form of seed funding to help the researcher develop a novel idea that will go on to form part of larger grant applications;
  3. The project must be carried out in Malaysia and completed within 24 months (2 years).
  4. The awarded grant must be used only for research materials.
  5. The awarded grant cannot be used for travel, equipment purchasing (e.g. personal computer, laptop, printer, server, scanner etc.) and wages or allowance for temporary and contract personnel; and
  6. The grant will be disbursed to the award recipient’s institution by Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

 

Eligibility

Applicant must be a research scientist/ physician with the following criteria: –

  1. Malaysian citizen currently residing in Malaysia;
  2. Must not exceed 40 years of age at the time of application.
  3. Possess at least a basic University degree qualification; and
  4. Must be currently working in Malaysia at public or private Institution of Higher Learning (IHLs) or any Research Institute (RIs)

 

Application Procedure
