Programme Level

The Master of Arts in the Teaching of English as a Second Language (M.A. TESL) programme combines theory, practice and research in issues related to the teaching of English as a Second Language (ESL). Students will develop the knowledge, competencies and attitudes required to identify and solve ESL-related problems by applying linguistic theories and pedagogical strategies to deliver effective second language instruction.

The M.A. TESL is intended for individuals who are:

  • currently teaching or intending to teach English to ESL learners
  • keen to enhance knowledge and competencies in teaching ESL
  • seeking to improve career prospects
  • planning to pursue a doctoral degree.

Experienced TESL teachers will find the programme especially suitable since seminars and tutorials are scheduled for weekends so that students can continue to teach full-time while undertaking the M.A. TESL programme

A Bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in a related field with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 or its equivalent qualification as accepted by the University Senate;

or

A Bachelor’s degree (Level 6, MQF) in a related field or its equivalent without a minimum CGPA of 2.50 can be accepted subject to the applicant having a minimum of 5 years working experience in the relevant field

or

Applicants without the minimum entry requirements above can apply through APEL (A).

The following conditions apply:

a)       All applications are subject to appropriate APEL assessments conducted by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

b)      Only Malaysian nationals can apply for the APEL (A) provision.

English Requirement for International student: IELTS 6.0 / MUET Band 4 or its equivalent
