Research Ethics
Overview
QIU’s Joint Research Ethics Committee (JREC) was set up by The University to review proposed research studies involving human participants or animal subjects to ensure that they conform to internationally and locally accepted ethical guidelines, monitor studies once they have begun and, where relevant, take part in follow-up action and surveillance after the end of the research.
Other roles and responsibilities include:
- To safeguard the rights, safety and well being of all trial participants as well as the welfare of animal subjects.
- To devise a university policy for the consideration and approval of a research project involving human participants and experimental animal’s welfare.
- To consider and decide on any application for approval of research involving human participants or animal subjects which is referred to The Committee.
- To stop an on-going study when it is necessary or require modifications to research protocols.
- To establish, implement and keep under review a procedure for considering appeals against decision made by the JREC, suspend or withdraw approval of a research project which is considered to contravene University policies or procedures on research involving human participants or animal subjects.
- To consider and advice on training provision for those involved in considering application for research project involving human participants or animal subjects and for those undertaking such research.
- To advise the Chief Operating Officer/ Vice Chancellor on the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to research integrity.
- To report annually to the University top management on matters within its remit.
